At Mears is a study about places we return to again and again; how the memories we cement become integral to our recollection of the landscape and its changes over time. These redacted stories are told in a collection of watercolor collages documenting time at a secluded cottage on Lake Michigan over the course of 24 years. The work commemorates family traditions of interactions with place and the influence nature’s changing façade imparts on our experiences. It’s a love letter to my boys who grew up jumping breathlessly through pounding waves, swimming to the sandbar, soaking in the countless stars in the dark sky, and running joyfully down the path each morning to break the seal on the pristine sand of our “spot” awakening it to the hard kiss of lounge chairs and beach toys.
